Before Katniss leaves for the capital she can have visitors. Madge comes to see Katniss and tells Katniss to wear the pin Madge wore on her dress for the reaping, a small gold bird in flight. Madge makes Katniss promise to wear the pin. What do you think is so significant about this pin? Why do you think that Madge thinks the pin is significant?

This is a very interesting question that is difficult to approach. I only really recall the third book, but we figure out that the "Mockingjay"(the small gold bird) symbolizes the head of the revolution. Readers do not know that at this point, so it is left to figure out. I believe that Madge finds the pin significant because either she has an idea how it will help Katniss in the future, or she wants a part of her with Katniss while she goes through this tough time. After all, each contestant in the Hunger Games gets to wear one item from their district, and Madge was probably set on it being her item.
